Carotid Artery UltrasoundCarotid Artery Ultrasound A Carotid artery ultrasound measures the blood flow through the carotid arteries. These arteries are the major blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. They branch off the aorta and work their way up each side of the neck carrying blood to the face and brain. Plaque build-up (usually caused by cholesterol) can restrict the flow of blood to the brain putting a person at risk for a stoke. The hardening of arteries from this plaque build up is known as Arteriosclerosis vascular disease. The ultrasound is usually conducted while laying down. Gel is applied to one side of the neck and a transducer is used to measure the length and amount of blood flow through the carotid artery. The same process is repeated on the other side of the neck. The test is painless and non intrusive and usually can be done in about 15-20 minutes.
